Intumescent fireproofing is often necessary for reinforcing steel structures within a fire protection strategy. How does intumescent fireproofing work?

When subjected to extreme heat, steel will reach its critical temperature. The exact temperature can vary based on the building design but is known to average between 350° - 750°. When it reaches its critical temperature steel begins to lose its integrity and load-bearing ability increasing likelihood of structural collapse.

In the event of a fire, the chemical properties of the intumescent paint undergo an endothermic process. In other words, a chemical reaction causes the materials within the paints to expand under high temperatures, creating a protective coating for the steel structural elements without affecting their mechanical properties or basic functionality.

Applying the Intumescent Paint.

When coating steel framework with intumescent paint, the paint expands into a carbonaceous char layer which solidifies at temperatures around 250°. This increases the steel's fire resistance allowing the building to be evacuated. The exact performance of intumescent paint can vary depending on the type, offering anywhere between 30 -120 minutes of fire resistance.


There are many ways to apply intumescent paint as part  of a fire protection plan, the most common being a spray application as a film coating. Many varieties of intumescent paint can also be given an aesthetic finish. 


Intumescent paints can be classified as either a thin or a thick film. Thin film is the industry standard and is commonly used in steel buildings. By comparison , thick films are used to withstand more extreme temperatures in industrial environments.
